About Millennial Doctor

Writing an “About Me” section on someone who’s trying to stay somewhat anonymous is a little ironic, but thank you for coming!

Reading my blog requires some faith that I am actually a millennial doctor, but anonymity is what allows me to be real and genuine. (If you’re curious, you can scroll down to the list of sites I’ve been vetted and featured in at the bottom of the page).

I put this out there because reading other people’s stories was so immensely helpful for me and I want the same for you.

Now more than ever, it’s important to know you’re not alone.

The Backstory

Born in Canada to Filipino parents (hence the random u’s scattered about), we then moved to the U.S. in my high school years during the midst of the dot-com boom.  Upon completion of med school and residency in the Midwest, I moved to the Pacific Northwest with my husband J and dogs Ernie and Oliver in search of coffee, craft beer and mountains.

I was so excited to start my career in primary care Med-Peds, but after a few years in private practice, I experienced an existential/third life crisis when I realized maybe this doctor gig wasn’t what I had wanted after all.

After 3.5 years and a lot of painful soul-searching, I came to a tipping point – either find a way out or crash and burn(out).  After a lot of angst, I buried my dream of being a primary care physician and embarked on a new chapter as a hospitalist.

3 months in, I realized I made a terrible mistakeA year later, I found myself retracing my steps back to primary care, but this time launching myself headlong into a world wide pandemic.

I’m still not sure where this road will take me, but I invite you to join on this journey.

Maybe you’ll find similarities to your story.  Maybe you’re stuck in the same place I was and haven’t found which way you want to move.  Maybe you need to see someone else doing it, not out of strength and courage but out of an unwillingness to keep living in misery.

The Blog

I initially started writing as a way to emotionally process my most impactful patient encounters, but the blog quickly became a living document of my journey through burnout.  There’s a strong slant toward financial independence and minimalism, plus you get to see how I’ve been navigating my immigrant parents’ thickly laid on guilt!

I don’t claim to have any answers… I’m still trying to figure out what it means to actually thrive – professionally and personally.

Fair warning: I question everything and overthink.

If that’s your jam, definitely sign up for my newsletter updates!

Posting schedule:

  • Blog posts go up every 2-ish weeks on Sundays
  • Unfiltered reflections and behind-the-scenes insights go up in my Instagram stories nearly daily, as do pics of my outdoor adventures in the regular feed

I want us to have a conversation and create real connection, something that is getting increasingly hard to find.

Please feel free to contact me on Instagram or e-mail me at M@reflectionsofamillennialdoctor.com.  Although I sometimes disappear off the grid/cell reception for days at a time to refresh my soul via camping, I do my best to thoughtfully respond within 2-3 days.  This is, after all, a one-woman show!

Given that I have zero interest in inserting spammy Subscribe now! pop-ups or gaming social medial algorithms to get my posts to you (I’ve really scaled back on Facebook and Twitter), the best consistent way to stay up to date on my journey and blog posts is to get on the list for my newsletter which goes out every other Sunday.

You’ll get insights you won’t find anywhere else, plus my personally curated articles/podcasts that inspired me for the week.

Get on the list below if you’re in, and thank you for sharing any posts that resonate with you!

As promised, here’s my brag list, *ahem* list of sites that believe I’m actually a doctor and have featured/published my work:
